Sarhad Rural Support Corporation (SRSC)

Sarhad Rural Support Corporation (SRSC) is a private, Non-Government and Non-Profit organization, established in 1989 as a Rural Support Programme and became functional in 1990. In March 1997, SRSC start functioning in Abbottabad and Haripur Districts to implement the Rural Development Programme of Barani Area Development Project NWFP. SRSC is also functioning in Charsadda, Kohat, Karak, Mansehra and Batagram.

The main objective of SRSC is poverty alleviation through sustainable rural development. For the purpose, SRSC harnesses communities’ potential to help themselves by establishing network of grass-root level institutions and to undertake and implement initiatives.

Programmes:

SRSC provides guidance to communities in the following areas:

Social Mobilization.

Natural Resource Management.

Productive Investment.

Human Resource Development.

Credit and Enterprise Development.

Social Sector and Gender Issues.

Approach:

To ensure the communities’ involvement and participation SRSC adopts the approach of “Social Guidance” for sustainable rural development.

Prerequisites of Social Guidance:

Before providing Social Guidance, SRSC takes following measures:

Identify true and honest activists.

Identify the poorest segment of the village and address their needs first, through collective efforts.

Identify and prioritize the needs of the poor specifically and of the village in general.

Forge meaningful partnership with communities to build a self-reliant, self-managed and sustainable system at village level.

Procedure:

The steps of Social Guidance are as follows:

To organize communities into male and female organizations so that they can make collective efforts towards poverty alleviation.

To improve their skills through arranging technical training.

To formulate capital through Savings and Credits.

To network Community Based Organizations (CBOs) with other Non-Government Organizations and Government Departments.
